The São Gonçalinho festival was the main event in my neighbourhood. My friends and I were eagerly anticipating the moment when we could demonstrate our courage by facing the tough biscuits (cavacas) thrown from the top of the church.
This moment was frequently decisive in determining who really was a chicken and who was not. Those who caught the cavacas first would automatically be blessed by the saint and hailed as heroes. I vividly remember, as a result of these acts of courage, returning home with completely bruised hands and one day, in addition to my battered hands and the divine cavacas, I also brought home a large rooster on my head, which crowed for several nights!
