I fondly recall the words of my family when they spoke of the print shop on Rua José Estêvão where my great-grandfather held shares, as well as the goldsmith’s shop next door, which was also our property.
I am pleased to have found some photographs that enable me to portray these family properties more accurately. I particularly remember with admiration the stories they used to tell me about the screams coming from the rooms adjacent to the printing works, which at the time housed the National Republican Guard. These screams were caused by the alleged torture of political opponents, which would be accompanied by the sound of a piano, as if arranged by Machiavelli, which according to them was used to disguise them!
