The following video shows the Democratic Opposition Congress held in Aveiro in 1973. I have lived in Lisbon for decades, but I cannot help but remember the moments of my youth that I spent at these demonstrations.

The 1973 Democratic Opposition Congress, held in Aveiro, was an important gathering of political forces opposed to the Estado Novo dictatorship in Portugal. It took place between 4 and 8 April and brought together over a thousand people, including notable figures such as Mário Soares, Francisco Sá Carneiro, and Salgado Zenha. The main objective was to discuss the end of the dictatorship, the conclusion of the Colonial War, and the establishment of democracy. Despite police surveillance, the congress bolstered the unity of the opposition and marked a significant milestone in the lead-up to the Carnation Revolution, which took place in 1974.
