I remember my grandfather, who lived in Verdeminho, saying that he had seen Eça de Queiroz come to visit the grave of his grandfather, Councillor Queiroz. He mentioned that what had impressed him the most was the monocle Eça was wearing. He had never seen a man with an eyepiece like that. It impressed him so much that he kept a photograph of the monocle in his memories.
